Sergio Ramos 'rejected Manchester United to return to Sevilla'

Sergio Ramos reportedly turned down the chance to make the move to Manchester United this summer in order to return to boyhood club Sevilla on a free transfer.

The 37-year-old departed Paris Saint-Germain when his contract expired at the end of June, and he was heavily linked with a move to Saudi Arabia earlier this summer.

There is also believed to have been interest from the MLS, but Ramos has completed a return to Sevilla, 18 years after leaving Estadio Ramon for Real Madrid.

According to The Sun, after Raphael Varane's injury, Man United approached the experienced centre-back, offering him a one-year contract worth £73,000 a week.

However, the report claims that the former Spain international immediately turned down the bid, as he was only interested in securing a return to Sevilla.

Ramos broke down in tears when discussing his return to Estadio Ramon and admitted that he had regrets over his exit from the club and celebration in front of the Sevilla supporters in 2018 when he scored against them.

"Today is a very special day. I'm finally coming home, I'm looking forward to feeling the Sevilla shirt again and pulling on this badge," he told Sevilla TV.

"Eighteen years have passed since I left, I think I've made mistakes and I want to take the opportunity to apologise and apologise to any Sevilla player who has felt offended by things and gestures I could have done at the time. We are all in the same boat, we are all from the same family and we have too many people outside to fight amongst ourselves.

"It makes me emotional to talk about my grandfather. The image I left with is very ugly, he left here crying. In the end we have been Sevilla fans since birth.

"The last memory of my grandfather is very ugly, leaving here (from the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan) and seeing how people whistled for his grandson.

"Obviously when making a decision I took it into account. We didn't deserve it. Neither as a family, nor as fans, I think it harmed and penalised all of us. When a point like this arrives, you receive many offers.

"I don't like to talk. But we had the opportunity to continue in Paris. Far from my house, from both Seville and Madrid. One reflects and sees how the years go by, and the opportunities went by too."

Man United re-signed Jonny Evans on a free transfer on September 1, and the Northern Ireland international finished Sunday's Premier League clash with Arsenal at the heart of the defence alongside Harry Maguire.

Varane's injury led to Victor Lindelof starting alongside Lisandro Martinez, but the two centre-backs were replaced during the second half of the game at the Emirates Stadium.

Lindelof and Martinez are both expected to be available for Man United's next Premier League clash against Brighton & Hove Albion on September 16, though, which is likely to lead to Maguire and Evans being back on the bench at Old Trafford. body check tags ::
