Sports Mole previews Tuesday's World Cup Qualifying - Africa clash between Senegal and Egypt, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.
Sports Mole

The Stade Me Abdoulaye Wade plays host to an African heavyweight matchup as Senegal and Egypt lock horns in the second leg of their World Cup qualifying clash.

The Lions of Teranga head into the game seeking to overturn their deficit after falling to a slender 1-0 defeat when the sides went head to head in Cairo last Friday.

Match preview

Senegal suffered a dent in their bid for a place in the 2022 FIFA World Cup as they fell to a narrow 1-0 defeat against Egypt in Friday's playoff first leg.

Liverpool star Mohamed Salah was at the heart of the action once again as his shot deflected in off Saliou Ciss in the opening four minutes which was enough to separate the sides.

This followed an unbeaten run in the qualifying group stages, where they claimed five wins and one draw to finish top of Group H with an eight-point cushion over Togo.

Prior to Friday's defeat, Aliou Cisse's men were also unbeaten in 13 straight games across all competitions, a run which saw them clinch their first ever Africa Cup of Nations title at the expense of Egypt back in January.

However, Senegal will feel confident of overturning their one-goal deficit on Tuesday as they return home where they last suffered defeat back in July 2019, claiming seven wins and one draw in eight games since then.

Egypt, on the other hand, who are currently 34th in the latest FIFA World Rankings, are now one step from securing their fourth World Cup appearance and equalling Algeria's current record.

Friday's victory came off the back of suffering a gruesome defeat at the hands of Senegal when the sides locked horns for the continental crown in January's AFCON final.

The Pharaohs of Egypt have enjoyed an unbeaten run in their race for a place in the World Cup after winning four and claiming two draws to collect 14 points and finish top of Group F of the qualifiers.

Carlos Queiroz's side head into Tuesday's game without a win in any of their last three away games against the Lions of Teranga and will be looking to end this dry spell and complete their revenge for their AFCON final loss.

Team News

Senegal suffered a huge blow at the defensive end of the pitch as Paris Saint-Germain man Abdou Diallo was forced off inside the opening quarter of an hour on Friday through injury.

He joins the duo of Seny Dieng and Alfred Gomis on the sidelines after the Queens Park Rangers and Stade Rennes goalkeepers picked up injuries at club level respectively.

In the absence of Diallo, 26-year-old Pape Abou Cisse, who has 10 senior appearances for the Senegal national team, could come into the heart of the defence alongside captain and Napoli star Kalidou Koulibaly.

Meanwhile, Egypt remain without the services of Ahmed Hegazi and Akram Tawfik after the duo sustained severe injuries at the Africa Cup of Nations back in January.

Ramadan Sobhi and Mohamed Hany have also withdrawn from the camp through injuries, while Mohamed Abdelmonem came off in the 39th minute through a concussion in Friday's first leg.

Should the Al Ahly defender fail to make it in time for Tuesday's game, club teammate Yasser Ibrahim should come into the XI, forming a centre-back pairing with 26-year-old Mahmoud Hamdi.

Senegal possible starting lineup:
Mendy; Sarr, Koulibaly, Cisse, Ciss; Kouyate, Mendy, I Gueye; Mane, Diedhiou, Sarr

Egypt possible starting lineup:
El-Shennawy; Gaber, Ibrahim, Hamdi, Fatouh; H Fathi, Al-Sulya, Elneny; Salah, Mohamed, Trezeguet

We say: Senegal 2-0 Egypt

Senegal will fancy their chances of overturning their one-goal deficit as they return to home soil where they have been utterly dominant. They are unbeaten in all but one of their eight home games since 2019, claiming an impressive seven wins in that time. While going up against a Salah-led Egypt side is a tricky task for any side, we are backing Senegal to come out victorious on Tuesday and claim an aggregate victory.
