Tottenham Hotspur announce that former striker Jermain Defoe has returned to North London to work as an academy coach and club ambassador.

Tottenham Hotspur have announced that Jermain Defoe has taken up a role as an academy coach and club ambassador following his retirement as a player.

The 39-year-old hung up his boots in March after a brief spell back at Sunderland, bringing an end to a playing career which spanned over two decades.

Defoe spent two separate spells at Tottenham, firstly joining the Lilywhites in 2004 and helping them win the EFL Cup in 2008, but he had already signed for Portsmouth before the final victory over Chelsea.

The ex-striker returned to White Hart Lane only a year later and spent a further five years in North London before leaving for Toronto in 2014, and he also represented Bournemouth and Rangers before his retirement.

Defoe will now take on an upstairs role at Tottenham alongside his coaching, with the former England international set to work with players from Under-17 to Under-21 levels in North London.

Defoe - who juggled player and coach duties while at Rangers - is also set to take on a greater role within the Tottenham fanbase and community as part of his position as club ambassador.

During his two separate spells at Tottenham, Defoe amassed 143 goals and 32 assists in 363 appearances in all competitions and sits sixth in the club's all-time scoring charts.
