Newcastle United edged out Tottenham Hotspur on penalties after the two sides shook hands on a 1-1 draw in a post-season friendly in Melbourne.

Just three days on from the end of the Premier League season, the controversial contest saw James Maddison draw first blood for Spurs before Alexander Isak levelled for the Magpies near the end of the first half.

A penalty shootout would subsequently be needed to determine the friendly victor, where an early miss from Bryan Gil proved costly, as Eddie Howe's men remained perfect from 12 yards to triumph.

Despite a gruelling season coupled with jet lag, both Ange Postecoglou and Howe put out strong starting XIs, as the likes of Maddison, Son Heung-min, Isak and Bruno Guimaraes entered the field from the first whistle.

Nick Pope was also selected in goal for Newcastle, but it was his poor pass out from the back that set up Maddison to rifle in the game's opening goal from close range.

However, the Magpies were level in the 45th minute thanks to an attack down the right, as Bruno Guimaraes released Jacob Murphy, whose ball across the six-yard box was pushed into Isak's path by Brandon Austin.

Spurs dominated a second half where no fewer than 24 substitutions were made, but Howe's men held out for a penalty shootout, where Gil stepped up first for Tottenham and had his effort saved by Mark Gillespie.

Joe White, Dane Scarlett, Ben Parkinson, Jamie Donley, Amadou Diallo, Tyrese Hall, Garang Kuol and Oliver Skipp all found the mark for their respective sides, before Harrison Ashby stepped up to seal the inconsequential win for Newcastle.

While Tottenham are now on a two-month break before meeting Vissel Kobe in a pre-season friendly on July 27, Newcastle are back in action against an A-League All Stars side on Friday. body check tags ::
