Sunderland have announced the signing of Nigerian forward Victor Anichebe on a free transfer.
The 28-year-old joked on transfer deadline day that he was heading for the Emirates to sign for Arsenal, but he now does have a new club after penning a deal with Sunderland until the end of the 2016-17 campaign.
The 11-time Nigerian international had been available on a free transfer after leaving West Bromwich Albion at the end of last season, and the striker has now been reunited with Sunderland boss David Moyes, under whom he played at Everton between 2006 and 2013.
"I'm really happy to be here at a great club. I have a lot of good friends here and everyone knows that I know the manager really well. He brought me through as a young player and was a big factor in me coming here," Anichebe told Sunderland's official website.
"I had a few options in England and Europe but the manager was a huge pull for me. He knows me inside out and I feel like he can get the best out of me."
Anichebe has become Sunderland's ninth signing of the summer.
