Sports Mole dissects the action as Paris Saint-Germain advance to the quarter-finals of the Champions League with a 1-1 draw against Valencia.

Paris Saint-Germain advanced to the quarter-finals of the Champions League with a 1-1 draw against Valencia in the second leg of their last-16 clash in the Champions League.

Valencia dominated the possession in the first period, but neither side came close to opening the score for the evening.

The Spanish outfit did take the lead on the night after 55 minutes when Jonas thumped a fine effort into the bottom corner. However, PSG levelled 10 minutes later when Ezequiel Lavezzi converted from close range.

Valencia pushed for the goal that would have taken the tie into extra time, but the home side held on to book a place in the final eight.

Here, Sports Mole dissects the 90 minutes of action between the two Champions League rivals.

Was the result fair?

It is a difficult one. Valencia were much the better team in possession, but did not really create enough clear chances to deserve to win the match. A 1-1 draw away from home against a team with the strength of PSG is certainly not a bad result, but the tie was lost in the first leg. The French outfit, meanwhile, were not at their best this evening, but they got the job done.

PSG's performance

Potential Champions League opposition will not have been too concerned by the Ligue 1 side's performance this evening. Granted they were missing their best player in Zlatan Ibrahimovic, but they just never really got going until Valencia opened the scoring. Their passing was also slightly one-paced, while they did not look too impressive in midfield without Marco Verratti.

Valencia's performance

It is hard to criticise a team that has secured a 1-1 draw away from home in Europe. They were perhaps too cautious in the first period, but they did create the better of the chances. There were also no signs that they lacked belief, but they just could not find that second goal in the final stages.

Sports Mole's man of the match

Alex: It was not really a match full of star performers, but the Brazilian defender was the standout candidate. When his side came under pressure in the latter stages, the PSG centre-back was first to everything in the air.

Biggest gaffe

Take your pick from a number of Aly Cissokho crosses. The Valencia defender found himself in good positions on a number of occasions, but the quality of his final ball left a lot to be desired. Not too impressive from the Frenchman on his return to his home country.

Referee performance

Milorad Mazic had a successful 90 minutes of action this evening. The Serbian was prepared to let the play flow in the correct areas, but was also quick on the scene when necessary. Overall, neither side will have had many complaints about his performance.

What next?

PSG: PSG will look to extend their lead at the top of Ligue 1 when they return to domestic action at home to Nancy on Saturday.

Valencia: The Spanish outfit will attempt to continue their pursuit of fourth position when they travel to Athletic Bilbao on Sunday.
