USA claim Ryder Cup triumph

USA win their first Ryder Cup in eight years with victory over Europe at Hazeltine.

USA have won their first Ryder Cup in eight years with a dominant 17-11 victory over Europe at Hazeltine.

After their whitewash session in the opening foursomes, Davis Love III's side were never behind throughout the event and despite Europe having the better of the first six singles matches on Sunday, they were never really in contention to replicate their heroics of Medinah four years ago.

Patrick Reed won a thriller with Rory McIlory while Rickie Fowler edged his clash with Justin Rose on the final hole, but it was a team effort from the home side as they won their first Ryder Cup since their win in Kentucky in 2008.

USA reached their target of 14 1/2 points when Ryan Moore got the better of Lee Westwood on the final hole of their contest, with the American winning the final three holes to overturn a two-hole deficit.

While Moore got his glory moment just a week after missing out on the Tour Championship last weekend, Sunday's play will be remembered for a captivating encounter between Reed and McIlroy and a showdown of the highest quality between Phil Mickelson and Sergio Garcia, who registered 19 birdies between them in a match that was halved.

McIlroy led during the early stages against Reed in what was the opening singles match of the day but his opponent, like he has all competition, matched the Northern Irishman blow for blow as he edged ahead just after the start of the back nine.

He was taken to the final hole as McIlroy battled on gamely, but Reed sealed the win with a birdie on the last to get his team's first point of the day on the board.

Henrik Stenson and Thomas Pieters both impressed on Sunday with wins over Jordan Spieth and JB Holmes respectively to give Darren Clarke's men hope, while Rafael Cabrera-Bello was another to get a point on the board.

However, USA required just two-and-a-half points for the win and after Brooks Koepka completed a comprehensive win over Danny Willett and Brandt Snedeker beat Andy Sullivan, Moore got USA over the line.

There were also wins for Dustin Johnson and Zach Johnson and although Martin Kaymer beat Matt Kuchar, it was merely a consolation as the 2014 winners were defeated by the better team.
