Argentina take a step closer to reaching the quarter-finals following a 38-16 win over Tonga.

Argentina edged closer to the last eight of the Rugby World Cup thanks to a 45-16 victory over Tonga at the King Power Stadium in Leicester this afternoon.

However, it could have been a different outcome had Tongan fly-half Kurt Morath not missed a number of conversions and penalties.

Both sides ran in two tries apiece during the first half, but while Nicolas Sanchez converted both for the Argentines, Morath was off target twice to leave Tonga 20-13 behind at the break.

Also, Sanchez added two penalties to go along with tries from Joaquin Tuculet and Juan Imhoff, while Morath and Soane Tonga'uiha went over for Tonga.

Sanchez and Morath both scored penalties at the start of the second half, but then the Tongan number 10 missed two in quick succession and was duly punished by his opposite number, who struck between the posts and then scored a try of his own in the 64th minute.

Then, with eight minutes remaining the Argentines, who were watched by former footballer Diego Maradona, claimed a bonus point as Julian Montoya managed to ground the ball just before his knee was forced into touch.

There was also enough time left for Santiago Cordero to get in on the act when he sprinted away to score his side's fifth try in the final minute.
