England's Joe Marler cited for alleged strike on Rob Evans

England's Joe Marler is cited for an alleged strike on Wales's Rob Evans during Saturday's match at Twickenham.

England prop Joe Marler has been cited for allegedly striking an opponent during Saturday's victory over Wales.

The 25-year-old is also still under investigation for verbally abusing Samson Lee in a separate incident at Twickenham, which came in the first half of the 25-21 win.

Marler is thought to have called his opponent a "gypsy boy" - a remark that the Harlequins ace later apologised for using, as revealed by the Welsh Rugby Union on Sunday.

While it is not yet known whether Marler will face any action for the comment, which carries a minimum punishment of a four-week ban if found guilty, a hearing will be held later this week looking into his forearm smash on Rob Evans.

A statement released by Six Nations tournament officials on Monday afternoon read: "Joe Marler, the England prop forward, has been cited by the independent citing commissioner, for allegedly striking an opponent in the 15th minute of the first half of the Six Nations match between England and Wales at Twickenham on Saturday 12 March, 2016.

"This citing of Joe Marler follows the citing of Tomas Francis and the Citing Commissioner Warning issued to James Haskell, each from the same match, which were announced yesterday evening following the citing commissioner's initial review of the match.

"The citing commissioner continued his review of the match overnight and considered that the incident in the 15th minute involving Mr Marler should also be the subject of a citing. A disciplinary hearing for the player will be held later this week, before an independent Six Nations disciplinary committee of three."

England's win at the weekend paved the way for their first Six Nations success since 2011, with one round of fixtures still left to play in this year's tournament.
