Wales rugby sevens captain Adam Thomas believes that his side made a statement with their emphatic opening victory at the Commonwealth Games today.

Wales rugby sevens captain Adam Thomas has said that his side went out to "make a statement" in their opening match of the Commonwealth Games today.

The Welsh got off to a flying start at Ibrox, hammering Malaysia 52-0 to take one step towards qualifying as group winners for the second day.

Thomas, who touched down twice in the victory, is now keen to repeat the performance against Papua New Guinea this evening before taking on Samoa in what is expected to be the group decider.

"We just said we were going to make a statement first game. I can't remember the score, 52 was it? So we'll just build on that now," Thomas told Sports Mole.

"It was just about being professional more than anything, making sure we didn't give away a try. We said, 'come out, do a job, go back to the hotel, come out again and do it against Papua New Guinea'. Another good win now would set us up very nicely."

In addition to Thomas, Lee Williams and James Davies also picked up a brace of tries in the rout.
