Former Wales captain and two-time Triple Crown winner Brian Price has died at the age of 86.

The Deri-born lock made his debut for Wales in 1961 and clinched a pair of Triple Crowns with his nation in 1965 and 1969, captaining Wales on the latter occasion.

Price made a total of 32 appearances for Wales and played 252 times for Newport between 1960 and 1969, captaining the Welsh outfit to a momentous victory over New Zealand in 1963.

A second row, Price also played all four games for the British and Irish Lions during their 1966 tour of Australia and New Zealand, and Newport paid tribute to a club legend following news of his death.

"We are extremely saddened to hear that Brian Price, one of the greatest players to have worn the Black & Amber jersey, has passed away," a statement from the club read.

"A native of Deri near Bargoed, Brian joined Newport in 1960 and made 252 appearances in Black & Amber. His finest hour in the jersey came in 1963 when he captained Newport to the famous victory against the All Blacks before a packed house at Rodney Parade.

"Having played 32 times for Wales and captained the national team to their Triple Crown wins in 1965 and 1969, Brian also played in all four tests for the British & Irish Lions on their 1966 tour. He later become one of the first inductees into our Hall of Fame in 2013. We send our sincere condolences to Brian's family, friends and everyone privileged enough to have known him."

Outside his playing career, Price worked as a PE teacher at Caldicot Comprehensive and became a journalist following his rugby retirement. body check tags ::
