John Fox: 'Wes Welker safety our priority'

Denver Broncos head coach John Fox insists that the safety of wide receiver Wes Welker is more important than getting him back on the field as quickly as possible.

Denver Broncos head coach John Fox has insisted that the safety of wide receiver Wes Welker takes priority over their desire to see him return to action as quickly as possible.

Welker suffered concussion during Sunday's 51-28 win over the Tennessee Titans, the second time that he has picked up such an injury in his last four games.

The NFL protocol over concussion injuries state that Welker will not be able to take part in full practice until Friday at the earliest, meaning that he will miss Thursday night's match against the San Diego Chargers, and Fox insists that they would not take any shortcuts in the 32-year-old's recovery.

"We'll go through the proper protocol, it's pretty strict, we're obviously concerned with any player's health. Player safety is our priority," Fox told reporters.

Welker also suffered concussion during the Broncos' match against the Kansas City Chiefs last month, but recovered in time to face the New England Patriots the following week.
