The surgeon who performed Rob Gronkowski's back operation has said that the surgery "went well".
The New England Patriots tight end underwent the procedure yesterday, which was his fifth operation since November.
A statement released by Dr Robert Watkins's office said: "New England Patriots' tight end Rob Gronkowski underwent a microscopic lumbar discectomy surgery performed by Dr Robert Watkins at Marina Del Rey Hospital in Los Angeles.
"The surgery went well. The timing of his return to football will depend on his progression through the rehabilitation program."
The 24-year-old previously needed four procedures to repair a forearm fracture sustained last season.
USA Today has reported that Gronkowski could be ready to return before the end of the pre-season.
