New England Patriots defensive tackle Chris Jones has accepted responsibility for the penalty that ultimately allowed the New York Jets to clinch a 30-27 overtime victory against his side yesterday.
Jets kicker Nick Folk missed a 56-yard field goal attempt in the additional period, but his effort was nullified by an unsportsmanlike penalty call on Jones, who pushed a teammate to try to block the kick.
That gave the Jets the chance to embark on another drive, which ended with Folk kicking the winning goal from 42 yards, and Jones admits that he knew about the new rule before the match.
"Yeah, it was something we talked about probably during camp and stuff, and it just slipped out of my mind," ESPN quotes Jones as saying.
"So I just, it was just my mistake, nobody else's. I've just got to man up and fix it next time."
The incident was the first time that a penalty of that kind had been called in the NFL since the rule was introduced at the start of this season.
