Rex Ryan has revealed that he expects Geno Smith to play in the New York Jets' pre-season game this weekend.
The rookie quarterback sustained an ankle injury during their first pre-season clash with the Detroit Lions, and was unable to play against the Jacksonville Jaguars last weekend.
The head coach told reporters: "He looked good [in Tuesday's practice]. I still don't think he's 100%, but I certainly think he's getting closer to that. I thought he had his moments where he really threw the ball well.
"I certainly understand you and anybody else assuming that he's going to play. We expect him to play, I hope so. But I want to see, at that position, I want to see a guy that gets the job done and is efficient, is accurate and plays with poise.
"I think we'll address [whether he will be the starter this weekend] at the appropriate time. I don't want to get into the ifs, ands or whatevers, because we're not there yet."
The Jets face the New York Giants on Saturday.
