New York Jets coach Rex Ryan "regrets" the injury suffered by quarterback Mark Sanchez during Saturday's pre-season match against the New York Giants.

New York Jets coach Rex Ryan has admitted that he regrets the injury suffered by quarterback Mark Sanchez in their pre-season match against the New York Giants on Saturday.

Sanchez picked up a shoulder injury during the match having been introduced in the fourth quarter by Ryan, a decision that many thought was an unnecessary risk from the Jets coach.

However, Ryan insisted that he is not going to dwell on the fact that his seemingly first-choice quarterback now faces an unspecified spell on the sidelines.

"You guys know exactly how I feel about that. Do I regret that he got injured? Of course," Ryan told reporters.

"But no, again, I'm not going to say anything more about it because I think I've covered it already.

"From my standpoint, I have to move forward, we have to move forward and that's where we're at. What's happened in the past, you can't do anything about. You've got to focus on the present and the future, and that's where we are right now."

The Jets begin their regular season against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on September 8, although Ryan is still yet to decide whether Sanchez or Geno Smith will start the match at quarterback.
