Geno Smith gets the better of EJ Manuel as the New York Jets record a 27-20 victory over the Buffalo Bills in the NFL.

Geno Smith has played a part in four touchdowns as the New York Jets moved to 2-1 in the NFL with a 27-20 win over the Buffalo Bills at Meadowlands.

Smith showed initiative early on to break the deadlock for the Jets, scoring from eight yards to finish off an opening-game drive of 80 yards in the endzone.

Early in the second quarter Buffalo responded to chip away at that advantage, with Dan Carpenter scoring a pair of field goals in quick succession to make it a one-point game.

An aggressive Jets defence then retrieved the ball quickly and made that count with a fine touchdown late in the first half, with Smith finding Stephen Hill for a 51-yard score.

With five seconds left in the half, Nick Folk's boot edged the Jets further ahead, nailing a 47-yard field goal to give Buffalo plenty to ponder at the interval.

Both sides were restricted to drives into a field-goal range as the match tightened up in the third quarter, with Carpenter converting twice to keep the Bills within striking range.

Early in the fourth quarter a spell of Bills pressure finally told as EJ Manuel scooped to Scott Chandler for a 33-yard touchdown pass, before a clinical two-point conversion levelled the contest at 20-20.

That parity would last just over a minute as the Jets went back ahead in some style, with Smith finding a clever shift from Santonio Holmes for a 69-yard score.

New York saw out the closing stages with effective rushing to keep Buffalo's poor recent run at the Meadowlands intact, with their last win in New Jersey coming more than four years ago.
