NFL continue to explore London franchise

Roger Goodell admits that the NFL has discussed moves to evaluate whether a London franchise would be possible.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has said that the league has discussed sending the same group of teams to play in the UK on a consistent basis in anticipation of a London franchise.

Goodell, who described the UK's response to the sport as "exceptional", admitted that a number of teams are interested in being regular visitors as the league continues to explore basing a team in London.

"First off, we've been very pleased at the reception to the game and the way that our business has grown over there," he said. "So we're looking at multiple games over there, and if that can occur, that gives you a better sense of whether it could really be a host community for an NFL franchise. That's what we're trying to evaluate.

"Part of the discussion today centred on asking if we should have some consistency among some of the teams going over there.

"There is a strong feeling that would help build a fan base of particular teams and might be more beneficial in the short term just to try to see can we build the kind of fan base that could potentially warrant a franchise at some point in time."

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers host the Chicago Bears at Wembley on Sunday, October 23, in the Buccaneers' second game in London in three years.
