Mo Farah: "I didn't want to let people down"

Mo Farah says that winning the gold medal in the men's 10,000m final at the European Championships this evening meant a lot to him after his recent illness.

Mo Farah has said that he was desperate to win gold in the men's 10,000m final at the European Championships after missing out on the Commonwealth Games.

The 31-year-old claimed victory in the final on Wednesday evening, with fellow Brit Andy Vernon coming in second.

He had revealed earlier this week that he was airlifted to hospital after collapsing following a training run and was forced to withdraw from the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

"It meant a lot to me," BBC Sport quotes Farah as saying. "I was really ill a few weeks ago but training has gone well. Winning the European Championships again really does mean a lot to me.

"I didn't want to let people down after missing the Commonwealth Games - it hasn't been easy.

"I won the 5,000m and 10,000m double in Barcelona in 2010 and I won one title in Helsinki two years ago. Now I'm excited for the 5,000m and I hope to run well again."

Farah has now won four gold medals at the European Championships.
