Sports Mole brings you live coverage from the evening session of the athletics at the Olympic Games in London.
Sports Mole

Good evening and welcome to Sports Mole's live commentary from day six of the athletics at the Olympic Games in London.

There are eight events for us to enjoy at the Olympic Stadium tonight, the pick of which is arguably the men's 110m hurdles semi-finals and final.

Also, it's worth noting that the gruelling decathlon continues this evening.

We'll have it ALL covered for you right here.

9.59pmThat's it from us. We'll be back bright and early tomorrow morning at around 8.30am. See you then.

9.58pmEaton takes a lead of around 220 points into tomorrow.

9.57pmEaton bosses the race from start to finish and wins it 46.91, which earns him 963 points and will see him extend his lead at the top.

9.55pmJust read an unpleasant stat: Today is the first day since day one of Olympics that Team GB have not won any medals.

9.54pmAthletes about to get into the blocks here. Eaton's in lane seven.

9.48pmHardee wins it 48.13s, ahead of Van Alphen, who he will move further clear of in second place. What can Eaton produce in the final race of the evening?

9.47pmHardee and Van Alphen go in the third heat which is about to begin.

9.45pmAfter the high jump earlier this evening Eaton had a strong lead over fellow America Trey Hardee, with Belgium's Hans van Alphen in third.

9.42pmOur leader Ashton Eaton goes in the fourth and final heat.

9.40pmRight then, the only event left out on track is the fifth stage of the decathlon - the 400m.

9.34pmDisappointed GB long jumper Shara Proctor has been speaking BBC Sport and said: "Today wasn't my day. I was struggling on the runway, to be honest. I just couldn't get it right. I came and tried my best, though I can't say I'm satisfied. Tonight just wasn't my game."

9.29pmWomen's 200m gold medallist Allyson Felix says that it's been a "long time coming" having finally claimed the Olympic crown.

9.27pm110m hurdles golden boy Merritt has been speaking to BBC Sport and says that he treated the final like a practice session in the hope of performing something "ridiculous". Merritt says he's proud to bring the sprint hurdles Olympic title back to America for the first time in 16 years.

9.25pmAnd the medals have just been decided. Brittney Reese of the USA has gold to continue a very good night for the Americans. Russia's Elena Sokolova has silver with a new PB of 7.07m, with another American Janay Deloach claiming bronze.

9.23pmRight, we're going straight back to the women's long jump...

9.21pmHe's awfully posh our boy Clarke. He lets out a "pah!" when asked what he would've thought if he'd been told at the start of the year that he'd finish in the Olympic top four.

9.20pmClarke has been speaking to BBC Sport's Phil Jones and he says he "can't believe" that he's come fourth at the Olympic Games.

9.19pmParchment's bronze time was yet another national record for Jamaica.

9.18pmDefending Olympic champion Robles pulled up midway through the race which is disappointing as he started extremely well and was right up there with the two Americans.

9.17pmGB's Lawrence Clarke took a surprise fourth and he'll be delighted, despite the fact he ran quicker in the semis.

9.16pmRichardson takes the silver as expected and Parchment of Jamaica bronze.

9.15pmARIES MERRITT WINS THE OLYMPIC 110M HURDLES GOLD MEDAL!

9.15pmI'm going for Merritt. Here we go...

9.13pmClarke is announced to the crowd and increases the noise by goading the crowd. What an atmosphere!

9.12pmDefending Olympic champion Dayron Robles of Cuba is also in action and is sandwiched between the American duo. Could that pull the Cuban quicker?

9.12pmClarke is in lane two, with Richardson in four and Merritt in six.

9.11pmThe two favourites for the event are Aries Merritt and Jason Richardson, both of the United States. It could be extremely close.

9.09pmSomewhat surprisingly, there is a British interest in this final as Lawrence Clarke qualified as a fastest loser earlier this evening.

9.06pmThere's golf carts out on track getting the hurdles out and we're around eight minutes from the start.

9.03pmCampbell-Brown, who surprisingly misses out on a 200m medal, came home in fourth ahead of Richards-Ross.

9.01pmFelix crosses the line at 21.88s, with Fraser-Pryce running a lifetime best of 22.09s and Jeter finishing at 22.14s.

9.01pmShelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce takes silver, Carmelita Jeter bronze.

9.01pmALLYSON FELIX WINS GOLD IN THE WOMEN'S 200M

9.00pm"On your marks."

8.58pmHere's where the big guns line-up lane-wise: 4 Fraser-Pryce 5 Campbell-Brown 6 Richards-Ross 7 Felix 9 Jeter.

8.57pm100m silver medallist Carmelita Jeter is also here with 400m gold medallist Sanya Richards-Ross. Felix will be favourite as she's the only woman to run under 22 seconds but the medal positions really are up for grabs. The women are just being announced to the crowd, minutes from the gun.

8.56pm100m gold medallist Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce will fancy her chances alongside another Jamaican Veronica Campbell-Brown.

8.55pmAllyson Felix of America will be favourite, but there's plenty of competition from two fellow countrywomen and two Jamaicans.

8.55pmNext up is the women's 200m final and this is a star-studded field!

8.52pmAfter three jumps, only the top eight make it through to the last three attempts and Proctor is down in ninth. She'll be devastated to not have continued the form from qualifying.

8.52pmGREAT BRITAIN'S SHARA PROCTOR IS OUT OF THE WOMEN'S LONG JUMP!

8.49pmAntyukh crossed the line in 52.70s, a new personal best, with Demus at 52.77s. Bronze was awarded to Zuzana Hejnova of the Czech Republic.

8.48pmThe Russian broke clear at the end of the final bend, stuttered at the third to last hurdle and was being tracked by Demus, who was just edged out.

8.48pmNATALYA ANTYUKH OF RUSSIA WIN'S GOLD IN THE 400M HURDLES!

8.47pmDemus is off to a flyer but Antyukh is responding.

8.47pmThey're off! One lap of the track, with jumps.

8.45pmThe Russian is the quickest in the field and will find her strongest challenge from Lashinda Demus of the US. This is the event of GB athlete Perri Shakes-Drayton, who'll be gutted not to be competing.

8.44pmNext up is the women's 400m hurdles final. The favourite is probably Natalya Antyukh, running in lane five.

8.37pmHarting produced one of the moments of the Games last night by hurdling the whole home straight topless after victory. What are those Germans like eh?

8.36pmThey're big boys these discus throwers and no bigger than gold medallist Mr Harting. I wonder how far he could throw me? I'm pretty small.

8.35pmNow for the medal ceremony of the men's discus throw, which was won by Germany's Robert Harting.

8.34pmProctor produces a good jump with her second attempt in the women's long jump final but a red flag is raised. The Brit is still way down the field after her first jump.

8.32pmMalcolm needed to oust Alex Quinonez at 20.37s but the Brit couldn't quite do it. Quinonez and Lemaitre qualify for the final as fastest losers alongside Bolt, Blake, Spearmon, Jobodwana, Weir and Martina.

8.30pmThe British veteran ran a good race but stops the clock at 20.51s, short of the time needed to qualify as a fastest loser.

8.29pmCHRISTIAN MALCOLM DOESN'T MAKE IT THROUGH TO THE FINAL OF THE MEN'S 200M

8.29pmHas Malcolm qualified, he finished third?

8.28pmCHURANDY MARTINA WINS THE THIRD 200M SEMI

8.27pmMathieu had a tough draw back in lane two and he just tried to get out way, way too early.

8.26pmMichael Mathieu of the Bahamas jumps the gun and a man who was in with a good chance of qualifying for the final is out. A small boost for Malcolm.

8.26pmFALSE START

8.24pmBack to the women's long jump final and hot favourite for the gold, Brittney Reese of America, has just jumped 7.12m and takes a massive lead.

8.22pmIn the final semi is GB's Christian Malcolm. He's drawn a tough semi though and is against the likes of Warren Weir of Jamaica, American Maurice Mitchell, Michael Mathieu of the Bahamas and Churandy Martina of the Netherlands.

8.21pmBolt tells BBC Sport that this is his favourite event and that there's "no doubt" who will win tomorrow night's final.

8.20pmBolt crossed the line at 20.18s, which means that Lemaitre should still qualify as a fastest loser.

8.19pmThe Jamaican 100m gold medallist was effectively jogging the entire home straight after a top start. Jobodwana of South Africa took the second automatic qualifying spot with a new PB of 20.27s.

8.18pmUSAIN BOLT CRUISES TO VICTORY IN THE SECOND 200M SEMI!

8.17pmHere's Bolt! The fastest man in the world is up in the second semi-final of the 200m. He's in lane six.

8.16pmGB's Shara Proctor has just jumped her first attempt in the women's long jump final. She gets a white flag and records 6.55m, way short of her qualifying distance.

8.15pmBack to the decathlon and Ashton Eaton has extended his lead in the event after clearing 2.05m. He now leads by 161 points.

8.13pmNot so good from the BBC Sport reporter, who failed to ask Blake why he slowed down so much. Either way, he's through to the final but only by two-hundredths of a second.

8.12pmThat's verging on stupid from Blake. He slowed down so early and finished on 20.01s. Spearman clocked 20.02s, with Lemaitre at 20.03s.

8.11pmThe Jamaican eased up massively and only just edged Spearmon to first. Lemaitre was catching the American but couldn't quick dip in front.

8.10pmYOHAN BLAKE WINS THE FIRST 200M SEMI!

8.09pmThis first semi is littered with talent. We've got Blake, Lemaitre of France and America's Spearmon all in contention. Expect Blake to clean up though.

8.08pmThree semi-finals, the top two from each automatically go through, with the two fastest losers also reaching the final.

8.07pmHere we go then, Blake, Bolt and the rest in the men's 200m semis!

8.04pmWeightman is just given the nod for seventh place and the crowd roars with delight as Weightman's name is read out. Top stuff.

8.03pmIt's a massive PB for the Brit and she seems to have been given seventh. The computer has recorded the same time of 4:02.99 for both Weightman and Slovakia's Klocova.

8.02pmGB'S LAURA WEIGHTMAN IS THROUGH TO THE FINAL!

8.01pmAbeba Aregawi of Ethiopia won the race, with Weightman in a photo finish for seventh place.

8.00pmLAURA WEIGHTMAN FINISHES SEVENTH IN SECOND 1,500M SEMI

7.59pmAt the bell Weightman is still in a good position in around seventh. Come on love!

7.56pmWeightman takes up a good early position on the inside. There's plenty of jostling as Russian veteran Tomashova shoulders her way through the pack to the front.

7.54pmWeightman goes in the second semi, can she run a strong race and steal a place in the final?

7.52pmEngland says it's a case of "what might've been" this year after a poor warm-up for the Games. Dobriskey says she thought it would be a slow race and that she took confidence from earlier in the week.

7.51pmDobriskey finished safely in fourth, with the top five sealing an automatic place in Friday's final. England started to kick around the final bend but started falling back as they reached the line, she finishes ninth and her 1,500m dream is over.

7.50pmGB'S LISA DOBRISKEY QUALIFIES FOR THE 1,500M FINAL

7.49pmDobriskey fourth as they enter the home straight.

7.49pmEngland needs to get herself into a better position here. Dobriskey faring better.

7.48pmDobriskey moves up a gear round the outside but there's nothing in it at the moment, one and a half laps to go.

7.47pmDobriskey is out the back of the pack at the moment, with England also safely in the bunch.

7.45pmThey're off!

7.43pmEngland and Dobriskey are likely to be our best hopes for reaching the final and we hope they go well in the first race.

7.40pmNext up on track is the women's 1,500m semi-finals. We have three British representatives here - Lisa Dobriskey and the aptly-named Hannah England in the first and Laura Weightman in the second.

7.37pmWe have another medal ceremony and it's the men's 1,500m that was dominated by Algeria's Taoufik Makhloufi. British running legend Sir Roger Bannister, the four-minute mile man, has recently given his views on last night's race.

7.35pmSo, the final eight through to tonight's final, which begins at around 9.15pm are: Merritt, Richardson, Robles, Parchment, Ortega, Brathwaite, Fourie and Clarke.

7.34pmHansle Parchment took second in that race with a new Jamaican national record of 13.14s. Impressive stuff.

7.33pmThe Brit moves through to the final as the second fastest loser. South Africa's Lehann Fourie ran a new PB of 13.28s but Clarke's 13.31s is just good enough to squeeze him through. He'll be delighted.

7.32pmLawrence Clarke HAS qualified for the 110m hurdles final

7.31pmDAYRON ROBLES WINS THE THIRD 110M SEMI

7.30pmOk, the third and final 110m semi is about to start. The big draw here is sunglassed-Cuban Dayron Robles.

7.28pmThe four men through so far are Merritt, Richardson, Ortega and Brathwaite.

7.26pmTurner is speaking to BBC Sport and describes his start as "shocking". He adds that he's "gutted" and feels he's "let everybody down".

7.26pmBarbadian Ryan Brathwaite took second place to move through.

7.25pmChina's Xie Wenjun ran a new PB of 13.34s and joins Clarke in the fastest-loser spots.

7.25pmTurner finished fourth and is out of the competition. Clarke, on the other hand, is still going through to the final.

7.24pmThat's a great time from the American and only one-hundredth of a second off his lifetime best.

7.23pmARIES MERRITT WINS THE SECOND 110M HURDLES SEMI IN 12.94!

7.22pmTurner gets a huge reception from the crowd and he has a real chance of qualifying here. If he is to progress it's likely to be in second as Merritt should walk this one.

7.21pmNo time to catch a breath as the second semi is about to start. GB's Andy Turner is up alongside Merritt of the US - one of the favourites for the gold.

7.21pmHe reveals that he was simply attempting to stick with world champion Richardson in that last race.

7.20pmClarke has been speaking to BBC Sport and he says he's "praying" that he's done enough to go through as a fastest loser.

7.19pmBelgium's Adrien Deghelt in fourth also ran a PB of 13.42s, while Darien of France will be disappointed with fifth.

7.17pmClarke beats his previous PB by two-hundredths of a second and he must now hope that he takes one of the fastest-loser spots for the final.

7.16pmClarke was in second midway through but was just ousted by Ortega of Cuba in the latter stages. The Brit has run a new PB of 13.31s though. Good work!

7.15pmJASON RICHARDSON WINS THE FIRST 110M HURDLES SEMI! GB'S LAWRENCE CLARKE THIRD!

7.15pm"On your marks..."

7.11pmLane wise, Darien is in two, Clarke in three, Richardson in four and Ortega in five. Expect two of those to automatically progress - Richardson and one other. Come on Lawrence!

7.10pmRichardson is one of two men in the three semi-finals to have run sub-13 seconds. The other is fellow American Aries Merritt, who goes in the next semi.

7.08pmExpect the long braids of Jason Richardson to streak clear in this first semi, with Clarke's biggests threats to qualification coming from France's Garfield (yes, Garfield) Darion and Orlando Ortega of Cuba.

7.07pmThe top two from each semi will qualify, with the two fastest losers from the three races making up the final, which takes place later this evening.

7.07pmThe first eight runners are just warming themselves up and getting ready. The camera has been trained on Great Britain's Lawrence Clarke and he has a chance of progressing here.

7.02pmThe javelin throwers are out on track, while the decathletes are still jumping high. Around ten minutes until the men's 110m hurdles semis.

6.59pmThe Russian didn't have the easiest ride in competition as he lost his competitive vest and had to borrow a teammate's t-shirt!

6.58pmErik Kynard of the United States collects his silver medal before Russia's Ivan Ukhov steps on to the top step of the podium.

6.56pmGB's Robert Grabarz is one of three men to receive a bronze this evening. He is greeted to a huge cheer by the now fully-packed stadium. He'll never forget this.

6.56pmWe have a medal ceremony about to take place in the Olympic stadium and it involves a Brit!

6.55pmYou may have seen that all the British athletes who win a gold medal at these Games will have a golden postbox erected in their home city. Jessica Ennis's in Sheffield has been vandalised in South Yorkshire. Tut tut.

6.53pmOne man who won't be competing in the 110m hurdles tonight is Chinese former gold medallist Liu Xiang, who pulled up straight away in the heats on Tuesday. He's due to have surgery on an achilles problem.

6.50pmHe's joined in doing so by Grenada's Kurt Felix.

6.49pmFrance's Kevin Mayer has just sailed over the bar at 2.02m.

6.47pmIn the javelin, Steve Backley is due to throw his first attempt at around 7.09pm.

6.45pmOk then, first up is the men's javelin qualification in 15 minutes before the men's 110m hurdles semi-finals (three of them) at 7.15pm.

6.37pmThe bar's now at 1.99m, how many will clear it?

6.32pmProctor going in the long jump is Team GB's only realistic hope of a medal this evening. We have two men going in the 110m hurdles semis and three in the women's 1,500m but I'd be surprised if any of the five made the final.

6.26pmEaton clears 1.96pm with his first attempt. Got a bit lucky there considering his leg seemed to clatter the bar. How it went over I'm not sure.

6.21pmThe US have three big names also in the final, with 400m champion Sanya Richards-Ross, 100m silver medallist Carmelita Jeter and 200m specialist Allyson Felix all lining up. Should be a cracker!

6.20pmFor the Jamaicans, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Veronica Campbell-Brown - gold and bronze medallists in 100m respectively - will look to claim gold.

6.18pmLooking ahead to later this evening, the women's 200m final is probably the next best viewing after the men's 110m hurdles. It's a star-studded field who line up for the second-shortest sprint, with effectively America and Jamaica vying for gold.

6.13pmHere's our leader Ashton Eaton with his first jump of the evening and he clears it at 1.93m.

6.10pmIt's still pretty empty in the Olympic Stadium as we wait for the bulk of the action to get underway. It'll be packed in about an hour's time, fear not.

6.03pmThe opening height of the high jump was a stroll for the athletes and they've Fosbury flopped over with little trouble. The bar's now at 1.90m.

6.01pmAs I said, the only event on show in the opening hour is the high jump of the men's decathlon. Click here to see the top 10 after the opening three rounds this morning.

5.57pmIt wouldn't be a proper night at the athletics without messers Bolt and Blake! The Jamaican duo are up in the 200m semi-finals at around 8.10pm.

5.53pmOne of the medal events this evening is the women's long jump and there's a British medal hope in Shara Proctor. The American-born jumper managed the furthest distance of 6.83m in qualifying but expect higher than that in the final.

5.47pmThe high jump is first up at 6pm and it's the only event until we hit 7.05pm.

5.46pmAmerica's Ashton Eaton currently leads the standings and you wouldn't bet against him. The 24-year-old is the world record holder and currently 135 points ahead of his nearest rival.

5.45pmThere's also more of the men's decathlon, which started this morning, with the fourth and fifth events - the high jump and 400m.

5.35pmWe have four medals to be decided inside the Olympic Stadium tonight. They are: women's long jump; women's 400m hurdles; women's 200m; men's 110m hurdles.

5.32pmEvening all! So, we're around half an hour away from the evening's athletics competition.

1.57pmIt all gets back underway at 5.30pm, be sure to join us then! Have a good afternoon.

1.56pmWe'll also be covering the semi-final and final of the men's 110m hurdles, as well as Usain Bolt and Yohan Blake in the 200m semis. There will also be the finals of the women's 400m hurdles and 200m sprint.

1.55pmThe decathletes will be returning this evening for the high jump and 400m and so will we!

1.54pmAll of which means that Ashton Eaton of the United States is still leading with 2848 points overall. His compatriot Trey Hardee is trailing in second with 2743. In third is Kasyanov with 2664 points to his name.

1.49pmAnd that concludes it. Karpov wins with a distance of 16.47m, while Behrenbruch ends up in second spot. Belgium's Van Alphen finished third.

1.46pmBehrenbruch improves his distance slightly with a throw of 15.67m.

1.43pmAn angry looking Oleksiy Kasyanov was not happy with his final throw of 14.17m. The Ukrainian took his frustration out on the high jump mat! Temper, temper!

1.40pmOverall leader Eaton has finished the event with a best throw of 14.66m.

1.38pmWe're now coming towards the end of the shot put, with the majority of competitors just having one throw remaining.

1.35pmBack to the shot put and Germany's Pascal Behrenbruch has also thrown well, reaching a distance of 15.47m. That will be worth 819 points to his tally, providing he doesn't better it.

1.32pmLet's quickly bring you some reaction to the women's 800m heats from earlier. South Africa's Caster Semeya, who looked impressive during her race, believes that a time under two minutes will be required to win the gold medal in her event. Find out why here.

1.26pmBelgium's Hans van Alphen nestles himself in second place with a throw of 15.48m.

1.21pmKarpov, who has had a decent campaign so far, takes the lead in the shot put with a throw of 16.47, which is the best he has produced all season. Some really good throws have already happened and we're still in the early stages.

1.16pmPredictably current leader Eaton goes even better, setting a new personal best with a throw of 15.48m. He's going to take some beating for that gold medal if his form continues.

1.12pmAddy of USA goes further than Warner, producing a distance of 14.97m, which is worth a hefty 788 points at the moment.

1.11pm...And the Canadian, currently in third position in the overall standings, throws 13.73m.

1.10pmWarner is first up...

1.06pmThe decathletes, minus Awde, are not back in the stadium and preparing for the shot put.

1.01pmBREAKING NEWS: Team GB's Daniel Awde is forced to pull out of the decathlon with a knee injury. More to follow.

12.46pmWe're expecting the competitors back in the Olympic Stadium at around 1pm.

12.45pmTalking of Awde, he is currently 19th in the overall standings with 1700 points from two events. His strongest event is the 400m, which is ran this evening.

12.37pmWe now have a short break while we wait for the decathletes to return to the field for the shot put. Hopefully Team GB's Awde will be fit enough to compete.

12.35pmA little bit more on Hitchton, who qualified in 10th place. She done so with a throw of 71.98m, which was a British record.

12.34pmLewis has been talking to BBC Sport about his progression: "Morning sessions are not easy. You have to be really awake. I'm super excited for the final. This is first box ticked and we'll see what I can do on Friday. I'm shooting for the medals."

12.32pmEven more positive news for the Brits! Sophie Hitchon has qualified for the final of the women's hammer throw.

12.27pmElsewhere, there has been some good news for Britain's Steven Lewis, who has made the final of the men's pole vault. He only made one jump, clearing 5.50m, so he should be fresh for the medal battle on Friday night.

12.25pmThe race was also notable for the appearance of Sarah Attar, who became the first women from Saudi Arabia to compete in a track and field event. She came last in a time of 2:44.96 - but that's a irrelevant really. It was simply great to see her out on the track.

12.23pmJaneth Jepkosgei Busienei of Kenya has won the race in 2:01.04, while Ekaterina Poistogova finished second. Third spot went to Rosibel Garcia.

12.21pmMeanwhile, the final 800m women's heat is underway on the track.

12.21pmQuick update on the decathlon, where Ashton Eaton leads after the long jump with 2079 points. His fellow American Trey Hardee is second with 1936 points, while Damian Warner of Canada is third on 1925 points.

12.17pmThere's some interesting discussions going on over at the pole vault. Britain's Steve Lewis and his fellow competitors are trying to convince officials that a clearance of 5.50m should be enough to qualify for the final.

12.15pmNataliia Lupu of Ukraine wins it in 2:08.35, with Arzhakova in second place. The final qualifying spot went to Cherono Koech.

12.11pmNext up is heat five of the women's 800m. Russia's Elena Arzhakova, who is the sixth fastest in the world this year, goes in this race.

12.10pmQuick Awde update. He's now visiting the physio before the decathlon long jump gets underway. It has been reported that both of his knees are causing him pain.

12.07pmSharp talking to BBC Sport after securing her progression: "I've got some really good training in over the past month and I'm in great shape. I wouldn't be here without my coach. I've grown so much over the past year."

12.06pmDefending champion Pamela Jelimo won the race in 2:00.54, while Eleni Filandra came third.

12.05pmAnd she eventually finishes second to be her place in tomorrow's semi-final. Great run from Sharp!

12.03pmShe's third with one lap remaining.

12.03pmThe race is underway and Sharp has started well. The pace is slow at the moment, which should suit Sharp's style.

12.01pmNext up on the track in the women's 800m is Britain's Lynsey Sharp. She's the only Team GB member in this event.

11.59amA modest 6.83m. However, what may be more of a concern is the strapping on his left knee. It really seems to be troubling him at the moment. We'll keep an eye on that and let you know if he is forced to pull out.

11.58am...Well it's now a foul! He was well short of the board this time. Awaiting the distance...

11.57amHere comes Awde's final jump...

11.57amJessica Smith was second, while Genzeb Shumi finished third.

11.56amFrancine Niyonsaba wins it in 2:07.57. Not exactly a mind boggling time!

11.54amThis is the slowest first lap I have ever seen in a 800m! 68 seconds!

11.53amWe're underway...

11.53amHeat three of the women's 800m coming up. Three of the competitors have not shown up for this one. Something we said?!

11.49amAs promised, here's more on Sebrle's withdrawal from the decathlon. A real shame to see the legend's Olympic career end in that way.

11.47amAlice Schmidt of the United States claimed second spot, while the third qualifying place went to India's Tintu Luka.

11.46amAnd a comfortable looking Savinova wins it in 2:01.56.

11.44amThe gun goes and the race begins...

11.43amRussia's Mariya Savinova goes in this one. Many have tipped her to claim a medal at the Games.

11.42amSecond heat of the women's 800m coming up...

11.40am...But it's another foul! He really needs to sort out that run up. He's yet to post a distance and has just one more jump remaining.

11.39amHere comes Awde in the long jump...

11.38amIncidentally, Montano's time was 2:00.47. Halima Hachlaf of Morocco took the third qualifying spot.

11.37amAmerican Montano wins it, just, with Semenya in second spot.

11.36amAlysia Johnson Montano has gone off like a train and she could suffer for that.

11.34amUp in the first heat is South African Caster Semenya, who is one of the most talked about athletes in recent time. Can she perform on the biggest stage of them all?

11.32amComing up shortly is the women's 800m.

11.27amAnother Brit, Daniel Awde, has fouled in the opening round of the decathlon long jump. Massive foul!

11.27amMeanwhile, Britain's Steven Lewis cleared 5.50m with his first attempt in the pole vault. Great start.

11.26amBREAKING NEWS: Roman Sebrle pulls out of the decathlon after one event. More to follow.

11.24amMcCormack admits that he was pleased with his performance while talking to BBC Sport: "I did everything I possibly could have. I'm very happy. It's the second fastest time I've ever run over 5000m. I gave it everything. It was a very scrappy race."

11.23amDejen Gebremeskel won the race in 13:15.15, while Yenew Alamirew, Thomas Pkemei Longosiwa, Bernard Lagat, Thomas Pkemei Longosiwa and Abdalaati Iguider also automatically qualify.

11.21amMcCormack gives it everything, but he can only finish 13th and he will not be featuring in the final.

11.20amONE LAP REMAINING

11.19amAnd with two laps remaining, McCormack is at the back of the breakaway pack and he looks to be struggling. He's a lot of work to do if he is to reach the final.

11.17amBritain's McCormack is still within the pack at the moment, although he is not used to running at this pace for so long. He could drift away when the final couple of laps approach. Let's hope not.

11.13amAmerica's Rupp now takes over from Mottram at the 2000m mark. This is a very, very quick race at the moment.

11.10amWith 10 laps to go Australia's Craig Mottram is setting the pace. At the moment, this heat is quicker than the first one. 11 seconds faster to be precise.

11.08amGB's Nick McCormack is also going in this one. It will be tough for him to qualify from what is a quality field.

11.07amSecond 5000m heat coming up, including Farah's training partner Galen Rupp of the United States.

11.05amAnother Brit, Sophie Hitchon, has also been talking to BBC Sport about her British hammer record: "I was in great shape when I came in. I knew it was there. I knew as soon as I let it go I knew it was good. Now I've got to wait and hope I make the final."

11.03amFarah has already been speaking to BBC Sport: "It was pretty difficult because I was pretty tired today. I'm happy where I am now though because I've got a couple of days to recover. There was quite a bit of pushing and shoving out there."

11.01amHayle Ibrahimov won the race in 13:25.23, while Isiah Kiplangat Koech, Lopez Lomong and Hagos Gebrhiwet also automatically qualify for the final.

10.59amFarah finishes third, but he was made to work very hard over the final 400m. Still, the main thing is that he is through to Saturday's final.

10.58amThere goes the bell and the speed increases. Farah is in fourth.

10.57amThree laps to go and Farah has a clear run on the outside. He's fifth at the moment. The pace will start to increase soon.

10.54amBack to Farah, who is now second with five laps of the track left to go.

10.54amNew British Record! 71.98m! What a throw from Hitchon. That's put her in fifth place. It's not enough to automatically qualify, but she may have just booked her place in the final with that.

10.53am...and she's thrown big. That could be a British record. Awaiting the distance...

10.52amHere comes Hitchon in the hammer throw...

10.51amFarah is down to seventh with eight laps to go. Nothing to worry about though. The race is steady and he looks composed.

10.49amWith 10 laps remaining, Farah has tucked himself on the inside and is in fourth position.

10.47amFarah is placed on the outside in the early stages in second spot. Looking extremely comfortable in what is a slow pace at the moment.

10.46amThey're off...

10.45amThe Kenyan duo of Isiah Kiplangat Koech and Edwin Cheruiyot Soi also go in this heat. They will provide some competition to Farah, no doubt.

10.42amThe experts on BBC Sport seem to feel that he has a great chance of taking gold in this event. He'll be confident of doubling up, that's for sure.

10.40amMo Farah has just entered the stadium to a rather loud cheer! Just five minutes until he goes in the 5000m.

10.38amOUCH! As Cuban Lazaro Borges plants his pole into the ground in the vault, it snaps in two places. Thankfully, Borges does not appear to be hurt. That could have been nasty!

10.36amRussia's Sergey Sviridov was second, with Yordani Garcia of Cuba taking third spot.

10.35amAwde wins it in a new personal best time of 10.71 seconds. What a great start for the Brit.

10.33amBack to the track and the one and only British decathlete is preparing to go in the final 100m sprint race. Daniel Awde has just told BBC Sport that he is aiming for a top eight finish overall.

10.31amJust to keep you updated with Steven Lewis in the pole vault. The Brit is yet to have his first attempt, with a few more athletes ahead of him in the queue. Anybody that clears 5.70m will automatically qualify for the final.

10.28amEaton's compatriot Trey Hardee finished second, while Canada's Damian Warner took the third slot.

10.27amWell he lived up to expectation there. Eaton runs it in 10.35 seconds, which is an Olympic best.

10.25amNext up on the track is race three of the 100m decathlon, which includes world record holder in this discipline Ashton Eaton. He's expected to leave the rest of the field trailing here. No pressure on the American!

10.24amBack over to the men's pole vault and Derek Miles of the United States is out, having failed to clear 5.20m.

10.21amBritain's Hitchon has been up in the women's hammer throw and produced a throw of 67.21m. That has put her eighth with two attempts remaining.

10.20amJangy Addy won it in 10.89 seconds, with Edgars Erins and Willem Coertzen second and third respectively.

10.20amOh dear. That was a little bit sad seeing Sebrle running there. As expected, the 37-year-old was slow out of the blocks and never made up the ground as he finished stone dead last.

10.16amRace two of the decathlon 100m coming up. The great Roman Sebrle will be competing in this one.

10.15amRussia's Tatyana Lysenko and Cuba's Yipsi Moreno are also through with throws of 74.43m and 73.95m respectively.

10.14amWhat a start in the women's hammer throw. Poland's Anita Wlodarczyk qualifies with a throw of 75.68m, which is a new Olympic record. She isn't hanging around!

10.12amIlya Shkurenev of Russia finished second, while New Zealand's Brent Newdick took third spot.

10.11amAnd Karpov wins it in 10.91 - his best run of the season so far. He looks in good shape as he collects 881 points.

10.09amRight, here comes the first of ten events for the decathletes. Bronze medallist from Athens 2004 Dmitriy Karpov is included in this first 100m race, of which there are four.

10.08amFormer British athletes Jonathan Edwards, Colin Jackson and Denise Lewis are currently discussing the decathlon on BBC Sport. What would we give to have that trio competing for Team GB in the their prime?!

10.04amDaniel Awde is the British interest in that event.

10.03amAlso, in around seven minutes times, the opening event of the decathlon gets underway in the form of the 100m sprint.

10.01amAnd there's actually British interest in both of these events. GB record holder Steven Lewis will be competing in the pole vault, while Sophie Hitchon is taking part in the hammer.

9.59amRight, the vaulting men and the hammer throwing women are out and being introduced to the crowd. Just moments away from the start of the action on day six.

9.56amWhile there is plenty to get excited about this morning, it's hard not to be drawn towards Mo Farah in the 5000m. He's expected to advance through to the final in his heat, but how quick will he go? Hopefully he's looking to send out a message to his rivals.

9.49amBusy, busy, busy!

9.48amTeam GB's Mo Farah then goes in the heat of the men's 5000m at around 10.45am. Then, at 11.35am, the women's 800m heats will take place.

9.47amSlightly before the decathlon gets underway, the men's pole vault and women's hammer throw qualification rounds take place. Both are due to start at 10am.

9.46amWell, the men's decathlon gets underway at 10.10am with the 100m. The ten-eventers will also compete in the long jump and shot put before the session is out.

9.44amSo, what's on the menu this morning then?

9.38amHere we are again then! Day six of the athletics at the Olympic Games in London. It's been enjoyable so far I must say. Let's hope that today follows suit.
