The International Olympic Committee has named Thomas Bach as its new president.
The 59-year-old German lawyer and former fencing gold medallist replaces Jacques Rogge, who had been in the post since 2001.
"I would like to thank all my dear friends and colleagues who voted for me this morning," Bach told reporters in Buenos Aires.
"This is an overwhelming sign of trust and confidence. I would like to thank my fellow candidates, who I respect, and those who did not vote for me.
"I want to win your confidence too. I know about the great responsibilities of the job - this makes me humble."
Bach will hold the post for at least eight years with the possibility of a further four at the head of the Olympic movement.
