New Zealand's Dame Valerie Adams has been forced to settle for a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games as her 12-year domination of the event came to an end at the Carrara Stadium this evening.
The three-time defending champion - who also won silver in the event in Manchester 16 years ago - was bidding to become the first track and field athlete in the history of the Commonwealth Games to win gold in the same event four times in a row.
However, the 33-year-old was forced to play second fiddle to Jamaica's Danniel Thomas-Dodd, who threw a national record of 19.36m to claim her first major gold medal.
Adams - who has only recently returned to competition after taking time off to have her first child - produced a season-best throw of 18.70m, but that was only enough for the two-time Olympic champion to pick up the silver medal.
Canada's Brittany Crew won bronze, meanwhile, producing a final throw of 18.32m to overtake Trinidad and Tobago's Cleopatra Borel in the final medal position.
England's Sophie McKinna's personal-best throw of 17.76m was only enough for fifth place, but she finished higher than the two other Englishwomen taking part in the final, with Rachel Wallader and Amelia Strickler ending the competition in sixth and ninth respectively.
