Virgil van Dijk delivers latest update on uncertain Liverpool contract situation

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk provides a fresh update on his contract situation following Sunday's 2-2 draw against Manchester United.

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has admitted that there is unlikely to be any imminent progress on his contract situation.

Van Dijk has made nearly 300 appearances since joining the Merseyside club from Southampton in January 2018.

The Dutchman has been a key part of a successful period in Liverpool's history, helping the club win seven trophies, including the Premier League and Champions League.

Van Dijk will be hoping to add to his medal collection this season, but there is considerable doubt as to whether he will have the chance to win more trophies with Liverpool in the 2024-25 campaign.

As it stands, the experienced centre-back will become a free agent when his contract expires at the end of the season.

Van Dijk provides latest update on contract situation

The 33-year-old was questioned about his contract situation following Sunday's thrilling 2-2 draw against rivals Manchester United at Anfield.

"Nothing," Van Dijk replied when asked by Sky Sports if there had been any developments over a potential new contract.

The Netherlands international expanded further in response to a question about whether he expected any update in the near future.

"I don't think so, but I am calm about it, like I said months ago," Van Dijk added. "We'll see what happens in the future and at this point, I have got absolutely no update.

"It's all about at the moment focusing, for me and the team, on Spurs [on Wednesday night]. It will be a tough game again, but a good [Carabao Cup] semi-final."

Van Dijk backs fellow out-of-contract star

Van Dijk is not the only star player facing an uncertain future at Anfield, with Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah both out of contract at the end of the season.

Alexander-Arnold was criticised for his sub-par performance in Sunday's draw, amid suggestions that transfer links with Real Madrid are proving to be a distraction.

However, Van Dijk does not believe that the transfer rumours are having an adverse effect on Alexander-Arnold's performances.

"No. I am fine with it," Van Dijk told reporters. "Trent has his own people around him, his family and we are there as well.

"He wants to perform in the best way possible like we all do. That is the main focus."

Liverpool will return to action on Wednesday when they travel to North London for the first leg of their EFL Cup semi-final against Tottenham Hotspur.

There is a possibility that Arne Slot may opt to rest the likes of Van Dijk and Alexander-Arnold for the trip to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. body check tags ::
