Andy Murray: Carrying flag for Great Britain an "amazing" experience

Andy Murray says that he was "really proud" to carry the flag for Great Britain in the opening ceremony of the 2016 Olympic Games.

Great Britain tennis ace Andy Murray has admitted to being blown away by the "amazing" experience of carrying the flag for his nation at Rio 2016's opening ceremony.

The three-time Grand Slam champion, named as Team GB's flagbearer earlier this week, led out the 366-strong party of competitors - Britain's biggest travelling delegation for a Games since Barcelona 1992.

Murray is looking to earn his third Olympic medal over the next fortnight in Brazil, and a second gold to match his success on home soil four years ago, but he confessed to being a little nervous when parading around the Maracana Stadium.

"It was amazing to get to carry the flag and but also be around the rest of the British team and chat to the guys," Murray said. "It's been a really nice atmosphere and I'm obviously really proud to get the opportunity.

"My first thought was 'don't drop it' and I was gripping onto the flag really tight. Then I was just trying to take it all in. The size of the stadium was incredible."

Murray will face Viktor Troicki in a difficult opening match when he gets his defence underway on Sunday afternoon.
