Chef de mission Mark England believes that British athletes will take a huge "boost" from the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games.

Great Britain chef de mission Mark England has hailed Rio 2016 organisers for the "vibrant, colourful and energetic" display in Saturday morning's opening ceremony.

An estimated three billion viewers tuned in around the world to watch the glitzy curtain-raiser, which celebrated Brazil's history, culture and natural beauty.

England, who was part of Team GB's 366-strong travelling party at the Maracana Stadium, believes that British athletes will be even more inspired to succeed in South America after witnessing the ceremony up close.

"It was a very proud moment for the athletes to step out into one of the world's great sporting arenas," he said. "It was everything we hoped it would be - vibrant, colourful and energetic.

"The team loved it and it has given them a real boost ahead of the competition. It was great to see our senior athletes step up and show their support."

Tennis ace Andy Murray was tasked with carrying the flag for Britain, who have set a record medal target for an away Games.
