Dai Greene: 'I'm not fit enough for European Championships'

British record holder Dai Greene admits that he is not fit enough to compete at next month's European Championships after his exit from the 400m hurdles in Glasgow.

Wales 400m hurdler Dai Greene has admitted that he is likely to miss the European Championships following his failure to reach the Commonwealth Games final.

The defending champion from Delhi made it to Glasgow despite a series of injuries, but could only finish fifth in his semi-final at Hampden Park this afternoon.

Greene has conceded that his recent fitness problems mean that he is not in good enough condition to match the form that saw him break the British record in 2012, and now anticipates that he will not be going to Zurich for the Europeans next month.

"I knew I was playing catch-up from a few months ago, I didn't expect to be here but my mindset did shift a bit and I wanted to make the final but ran out of steam, sadly it wasn't to be," he told BBC Sport.

"I was provisionally selected for the European Championships but I don't think I'll make the squad now. I'm not fit enough really, it has been frustrating but I'm happy to have given it a shot and the support I have had has been fantastic, so thank you."

Greene is the reigning European champion and also won 400m hurdles gold at the 2011 World Championships.
