Alvarez capitalised on an error from Edmundo Sosa to make it 3-0 to the Astros in the first inning, and a two-run homer from Alec Bregman increased the Astros' advantage to 5-0.
Not until the seventh inning would the Phillies finally get on the board through Nick Castellanos, and Kyle Schwarber's two-run homer was then called foul as the Astros held firm.
Philadelphia reduced the deficit further in the ninth inning through Alec Bohm after an error, but there were no further runs for the National League champions, who travel to Citizens Bank Park for Game 3 on Monday night.
