In the 1990-91 season, Michael Jordan took his game to a new level as he led the legendary Chicago Bulls side to the title with outstanding performances night after night.
Achievements were reached with apparent ease throughout Jordan's career, and on this day in 1991 the five-time MVP passed a big milestone by hitting the 15,000-point mark in the NBA.
Famous for his incredible athleticism and consistent shooting from all over the court, Jordan had to settle for a free throw to hit the target after Manute Bol of the Philadelphia 76ers had been penalised for a technical foul.
Just two years earlier he had reached the 10,000-point milestone, with that achievement arriving in Philadelphia too.
"It would have been nice to have done it in Chicago," said Jordan. "It seems like every time I've passed a milestone, it's been in Philadelphia."
Only Wilt Chamberlain (358 games) had hit 15,000 points quicker than Jordan, who was playing in his 460th game for the Bulls, and it came as little surprise to see Chicago celebrating a 107-99 win at the end of the night.
In a season which included plenty of special nights, a 40-point display against the Sixers was just another evening for the man who would dominate the league for many years to come.
Jordan would finish the season celebrating the first of his six NBA titles, and he deservedly picked up the MVP award after averaging 31.5 points per game in the regular season.
In his day, Chamberlain set some records which may never be broken, but on January 9, 1991 it was all about Jordan, who continued to redefine the role of the superstar in the NBA.
