The sides were closely matched throughout, but a three-pointer from the point guard inside the final two seconds left the Pelicans four points down.

The New York Knicks set a new franchise record for most defeats in a row as they lost their 13th straight game against the Washington Wizards.

With Carmelo Anthony among those out injured, the visitors were short-handed, allowing John Wall to lead the charge for the Wizards, who led by 12 at the break before cruising in the second half.

The Atlanta Hawks maintained their lead at the top of the Eastern Conference with a win over the Memphis Grizzlies, leaving them on a six-game winning streak.

Andrew Wiggins missed a potentially game-winning three-pointer in the final second of the Minnesota Timberwolves' defeat to the Phoenix Suns.

The home side were just two points behind when the top pick from the 2014 Draft looked for a late winner, but his last-gasp miss condemned Minnesota to their 13th straight defeat.

The Sacramento Kings avoided making it 13 losses in a row as they eased to a win over the Oklahoma City Thunder.
