New Zealand boxer David Light praises his "dedicated" teammates after advancing into the quarter-finals of the Commonwealth Games.

New Zealand boxer David Light has branded his teammates "the most dedicated team" that he has known following a brilliant day for New Zealand boxing.

Light booked his spot in the quarter-finals of the Heavyweight division after the referee was forced to stop his bout with Muhammed Meeraj Omar in the second round.

The 22-year-old also took the time to praise teammate Leroy Hindley, who also advanced into the quarter-finals of the Commonwealth Games on Sunday.

"We have got probably the most dedicated team I have known," he told Sports Mole.

"Leroy, what he has done to get into the team is amazing. He uprooted his life – moving to Auckland and he had no guarantee of being in the team. He had to get funded by friends even to qualify so it is just the most dedicated bunch of dudes and we all bounce off each other. It is awesome."

When asked if it was hard to watch his teammates fight before him, Light responded: "Yeah, it is a bit hard when they are all winning! It puts the pressure on you, but I cannot complain, I am just stoked for the team.

"Learning to use the vibe of the crowd is important. They just want to see good fights and they want to see each fighter do well."

Light will face Charles Odhiambo Okoth in the quarter-finals on Wednesday.
