Eddie Hearn: 'Kell Brook is in a strong position'

Kell Brook's promoter Eddie Hearn insists that Devon Alexander's rumoured clash with Floyd Mayweather will not disrupt the Sheffield welterweight's position as mandatory challenger for the IBF title.

Matchroom boxing promoter Eddie Hearn has insisted that Kell Brook remains in pole position to fight for a world title despite the confusion surrounding his postponed clash with IBF champion Devon Alexander.

Brook had his Detroit date with Alexander scrapped earlier this week, with the American citing a biceps injury as his reason for withdrawing.

Pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr. muddied the waters earlier today when he took to Twitter with an announcement that Alexander looked likely to be his next opponent on May 4.

He tweeted: "The negotiations for my fight are almost done. The front-runner is IBF Champion Devon Alexander. It'd be a unification bout at welterweight."

Hearn believes that the IBF would not grant Alexnader the right to defend his belt against Mayweather because he has a signed contract stating that Brook is next in line to fight for that title.

He told Sky Sports News: "If they don't want the fight, they don't want the fight. What I won't let happen is for it to disrupt the career path of Kell Brook.

"I will make sure we fight tooth and nail to get justice for Kell and if that means putting pressure on to get Alexander to vacate the title, or more likely Golden Boy to come back this week and give us a new date, which I think is the likely scenario, then we will see what happens.

"I won't have Kell messed around. He's away, making huge sacrifices away from his family to prepare for the fight of his life. I think if I was a gambler, I'd say it will go ahead. The whole thing seems a little bit cheesy to me and a little bit fishy from the Mayweather camp."

Hearn also conceded that Brook may appear on his March show at Wembley Arena in order to keep busy after committing to a 14-week training camp.
