Bolton fighter Amir Khan defends his involvement with Victor Conte.

Amir Khan is standing by his involvement with convicted drugs cheat Victor Conte.

The American was jailed in 2005 after pleading guilty to conspiracy to distribute banned steroids, and the Bolton scrapper has come under fire from UK Anti-Doping for training with him.

However, Khan insists that having Conte has part of his backroom team has been beneficial despite his shady background.

"The advice he's been giving me has been brilliant," BBC Sport quotes Khan as saying. "I know he's had a bad background and has done things he shouldn't have."

Khan went on to say that inducting Conte into his team was the decision of his trainer Virgil Hunter.

He added: "I never wanted to argue with Virgil. He's the one who brought him onto the team. I didn't really want to cause a big scene. I told Virgil and he said 'look, if anybody's got a problem with it, come and tell them to talk to me'.

"He's the boss and I have to listen to what he says. He's the one who's advising me to work with Victor and I have to listen to what he says."

Khan will take on Mexico's Julio Diaz in Sheffield in what will be his first fight on British soil for two years.
