Amir Khan: 'I will have to be smart against Saul Alvarez'

Amir Khan admits that he will have to execute a smart gameplan in order to nullify Saul Alvarez's size advantage when he faces the WBC middleweight champion in Las Vegas.

Amir Khan has admitted that he will analyse Floyd Mayweather Jr's victory over Saul Alvarez before facing the Mexican on May 7.

On Tuesday, Khan announced that he would face WBC middleweight champion Alvarez in Las Vegas despite never competing above the welterweight limit, although the spring bout will take place at a catchweight of 155lbs.

Alvarez has suffered just one defeat in 48 professional outings - on points to Mayweather in September 2013 - and Khan feels that the former pound-for-pound king's triumph over the physically-stronger South American is proof that his opponent's power can be neutralised.

The 29-year-old told Sky Sports News: "He is going to be a little bit stronger going into this fight against me, but watching how Floyd Mayweather beat him; Floyd boxed him, was smart and he moved well - he wasn't standing there with him.

"Obviously I am going to pick a few things out of that fight. Alvarez looked really good in that fight, he was sharper, he was quicker. I have the hand speed, I have the great footwork so we know what to do.

"We are going to have a great gameplan. With Virgil Hunter here in San Francisco, we are going to set a gameplan to go into the fight and we are going to go in there and execute it."

The showdown is expected to headline the first boxing card at the new T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
