Amir Khan has revealed that he will fight Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez for the WBC middleweight title in Las Vegas on May 7.
The British boxer, who has held the unified WBA and IBF light welterweight titles, will face an opponent who has lost just one of his 48 bouts, which was against pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Alvarez has come away with 46 wins, 32 by knockout, and drawn just the once, while Khan has earned 31 victories and lost three times.
The announcement has come as a surprise as most of the headlines have centred around talks regarding a potential match-up between Khan and his British long-time rival Kell Brook.
Khan tweeted: "Delighted to announce i will be fighting @Canelo May 7th Cinco De Mayo, Las Vegas for the 155lbs @WBCBoxing title!"
WBC welterweight champion Danny Garcia was also an option for Khan, but the Brit has opted to take on the 25-year-old Mexican.
