Liverpool fighter Derry Mathews has become the new British Lightweight champion after defeating Anthony Crolla in Oldham.
Following an even opening two rounds, the challenger shocked all in attendance in round three by landing a superb left hook to Crolla's chin and sending the 25-year-old to the floor for the first time in both his amateur and professional careers.
Crolla had seemed to recover but Mathews then went on the offensive and landed a flurry of punches, leaving Crolla groggy. The referee ended the contest with four seconds of round five remaining.
Despite holding the English and WBU Featherweight titles in the past, 28-year-old Mathews had never held a British title.
