Northern Ireland boxer Michaela Walsh admits that she only wants to win gold in the women's flyweight competition at the Commonwealth Games.

Northern Ireland boxer Michaela Walsh has admitted that she is only interested in winning the gold medal after reaching the semi-finals of the women's flyweight event at the Commonwealth Games.

The Glasgow Games are the first to host women's boxing, while Walsh's progression to the semis ensures that she is her country's first female medallist in the sport.

Following her win over Sarah Joy Rae of Jamaica, the 21-year-old said: "I knew I had to go to her in the first because of the height difference. As soon as I changed my tactics I felt like I was hitting her with ease. I believe if I perform to the best of my ability I can go all the way.

"People ask me about Adams but that's not until the final. I'm a big fan of Nicola and I've followed her throughout her career. I'm going for one colour and one colour only.

"I've trained so hard for this, I boxed 57 last year and I'm down to 51 now and I feel good at the weight I'm making. I've got the diet right and the training right, I've got the best trainers in the world."

Walsh will face Pinki Rani of India in her next bout, with the prospect of facing Olympic champion Nicola Adams if she reaches the gold-medal fight.
