Chavez Jr. went into the final round needing a knockout to keep his belt, and came out all guns blazing to produce a stirring finish.
Martinez was dropped in the 12th by a pair of punishing hooks, but got off the canvas and survived a late onslaught to reach the final bell.
The Argentine won a wide unanimous decisions from the judges, with the scorecards reading 118-110, 117-110, 118-110 all in his favour.
