Sam Maxwell: 'I thought I did enough'

Team GB boxer Sam Maxwell speaks to Sports Mole following his elimination at the last-16 stage of the 2015 European Games.

Sam Maxwell believes that he 'did enough' to beat Sweden's Clarence Goyeram in the last-16 stage of the 2015 European Games on Sunday.

According to the judges' scorecards, Maxwell lost the bout 2-1 in Baku, despite the fact that the Team GB boxer seemed to dominate the second round.

The 26-year-old, however, has vowed to bounce back from the disappointment.

"I knew it was close. I felt like I started off a little slow and then started to take over the fight. I thought that I dominated into the last round, but it was already too late," Maxwell told Sports Mole.

"We knew that he was wild and puts everything in. I knew the first round was going to be close, but I still wanted to make him work. He made the weight wrong – I saw him in the sauna and stuff and I knew he was going to be tired. In my head, I didn't mind if I had lost the first round, because I knew I was going to win the second and third, and I thought I managed to do that.

"I think when decisions go against you, you can half expect it when it is a home decision, but I have beaten him before and I expected to beat him again. I expected it to be fair and I just don't understand why it wasn't. Maybe I need to watch it back and see where he was scoring, but I am definitely going to build on it and hopefully keep my spot for the Europeans."

Maxwell won a bronze medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
