Australia have dominated day two of the first Ashes Test match with England, opening up an advantage of 224 runs at the close of play.

England quickly wrapped up the two remaining Australia wickets in the morning session, but Ryan Harris and Mitchell Johnson picked up a wicket apiece to reduce the tourists to 55-2 at lunch.

However, despite Michael Carberry recording 40 on his Ashes debut, the match swung further in Australia's favour during the afternoon as their bowlers ripped through England's middle order to leave Alastair Cook's side in disarray on 94-8 ahead of the evening session.

Stuart Broad scored a quick-fire 32 before England were all out for 136, with Johnson the pick of the Australia bowlers after recording figures of 4-61, while Harris chipped in with three wickets.

England's collapse brought David Warner and Chris Rogers out into the middle for the final 90 minutes of the day, but they negotiated 22 overs without much alarm to reach 65-0 to leave the visitors with a huge task on day three to give themselves a chance of saving this Test match.
