England are 55-2 at lunch on day two of the first Ashes Test match against Australia in Brisbane, chasing the hosts' first-innings total of 295.

England have got to 55-2 at lunch on day two of the first Ashes Test match in Brisbane, with Australia having made 295 from their first innings at The Gabba.

The hosts resumed play on 273-8, with Brad Haddin (78) and Ryan Harris (4) at the crease, and it did not take long for the tourists to mop up the tail.

It was Stuart Broad who made the crucial early breakthrough, claiming his sixth wicket of the match to remove Harris (9), caught behind by Matt Prior.

Haddin (94) soon followed, six runs shy of triple figures, as he chased a second from a push through point.

Michael Carberry was quick onto it, although his throw was an awkward one over the stumps, which Prior did well to take and swipe off the bails in one motion before the Aussie wicketkeeper could make up his ground.

Alastair Cook and Carberry came in to bat, and made a solid start to get to 28-0 before the England skipper edged Harris behind to Haddin with just 13 runs to his name.

Mitchell Johnson then tested the fortitude of new batsman Jonathan Trott with a bouncer just before lunch, but the batsman appeared unfettered as he flicked the next ball away to the leg side.

However, just as Broad did yesterday, Johnson took a vital wicket just before lunch, tempting Trott (10) into a shot that found an edge and carried through to Haddin.

The umpires then called for lunch, meaning that Carberry (31) will come back for the second session partnered by Kevin Pietersen.
