Australia set England a target of 561 after declaring on 401-7 with less than an hour remaining of day three of the first Test match in Brisbane.

Australia have declared on 401-7 in their second innings to set England a target of 561 to win the first Ashes Test match in Brisbane.

After building an advantage of 458 runs at tea, Brad Haddin and Mitchell Johnson cut loose in the final session to score 53 and 39 respectively.

A declaration appeared likely when Haddin was dismissed by Chris Tremlett, but Peter Siddle entered the action to add four more runs before Michael Clarke called his batsmen in.

England must now complete a record run-chase to win the Test, or bat for more than two days to avoid falling behind in the five-match series.
