Cricket Australia has confirmed that Michael Clarke will undergo surgery on his damaged right hamstring on Tuesday.
The Australia captain had to leave the field early on the final day of the first Test against India at Adelaide.
Steve Smith has replaced Clarke as temporary captain until the 33-year-old is fit enough to return to the team.
Australian team doctor Peter Brukner told BBC Sport: "Whilst surgery is not always required with hamstring injuries, Michael has substantial damage to a key part of the hamstring tendon and it was felt the best course of action was to surgically repair the damaged area.
"His recovery and the timing of his return to play will be dependent on the surgeon's advice and how well he recovers in the coming weeks."
Clarke has admitted his fear that he may never play cricket again as a result of the injury.
