Australia batsman David Warner says that Phil Hughes will "forever" be in his heart after the cricketer died from serious head injuries today.

Australia batsman David Warner has paid tribute to his teammate Phil Hughes, who has passed away at the age of 25 following a serious head injury.

The cricketer failed to recover in hospital after he was struck by a ball bowled by Sean Abbott during a Sheffield Shield match on Tuesday.

Hughes collapsed on the field and was transferred to St Vincent's Hospital in Sydney, where doctors revealed that the sportsman had suffered vertebral artery dissection.

Warner was among a number of Australian cricketers who visited the hospital, and was photographed leaving in tears after the news was confirmed.

He wrote on Instagram: "RIP my little man. You will always be with me when I walk out onto the field. Not just a mate but a loved one to us all big man. Forever in my heart brother for life. Miss you buddy."
