Roma vs. Lazio: Head-to-head record and past meetings

:Headline: Roma vs. Lazio: Head-to-head record and past meetings:
Ahead of Sunday's Serie A clash between Roma and Lazio, Sports Mole looks at the head-to-head record and previous meetings between the two clubs.
Sports Mole

Roma and Lazio meet for the first instalment of the Derby della Capitale this season in Serie A on Sunday night.

In what will be the 200th meeting between the two bitter rivals, when friendlies and other unofficial matches are included, the historical record favours the Giallorossi, but the Biancocelesi are not too far behind.

It has certainly not been a fixture for the purists in recent years, with four 1-0s and a 0-0 across the last five clashes, but there is always an edge to this derby that makes it one of the most eagerly anticipated in the Italian football calendar.

Here, Sports Mole looks back at the head-to-head record and some notable moments between the two giants of football in the Italian capital.

Head-to-head record

Previous meetings: 183
Roma wins: 69
Draws: 63
Lazio wins: 51

After numerous dull affairs between Maurizio Sarri and Jose Mourinho, there was a continuation of that trend when Daniele De Rossi and Igor Tudor took charge in the most recent meeting, with another scrappy, gritty encounter ending 1-0 in favour of Roma.

Many have gone in Lazio's favour of late though, as the previous four prior to that Roma win in April yielded three 1-0 wins, as well as a goalless stalemate in the league in 2022-23, with none of those four games seeing the sides register more than 20 shots between them.

In that goalless draw, there were just 13 shots, while in the reverse fixture in Serie A this season, the two sides managed only a combined 15.

There is not much to separate the two in their all-time record, with Roma edging it 69 wins to 51, with 63 draws too, but Lazio frequently struggle when playing as the designated away team in this fixture.

Despite still technically being on home soil, playing in front of the Roma fans has seen Lazio win just four of their last 30, while the Giallorossi have also registered some of the most emphatic wins in this fixture.

A 4-1 win as the 'away' side in 2016 was one of Roma's famous recent results, but that was not as sweet as a 5-1 victory over their rivals in 2002, when they came so close to retaining the Serie A title they won the year previously.

Lazio's 2-1 win over Roma in March 2000 proved crucial in them claiming a famous Scudetto though, as that win kickstarted an incredible run of form which also saw them beat Juventus a week later on their way to winning the title by one point, taking 22 points from their final eight games.

Francesco Totti is the all-time joint-top scorer in this fixture with 11 goals, and he got both in a 2-2 draw for Roma back in 2015, when his 'selfie' celebration in front of Curva Sud after netting the equaliser went viral across the globe.

The most recent meeting between the two was at the start of 2024, when Lazio beat Roma 1-0 in the Coppa Italia quarter-finals, and some of the most thrilling recent encounters between Rome's finest have come in the cup.

In a two-legged Coppa semi-final back in 2016-17, Lazio won a pulsating tie 4-3 on aggregate, leading 2-0 from the first leg, but almost being pegged back despite leading 4-1 at one point in the second half of the second leg.

One of the finest moments in Lazio's history came in 2013 though, when a Derby della Capitale Coppa Italia final, played at the Olimpico, saw Senad Lulic net the only goal for the Biancocelesti to win the trophy at the expense of their bitter rivals.
