Australia opener David Warner claims that he will be able to play with a thumb injury in the third Test against India.

Australia opener David Warner has played down any concerns that he could miss the third Test against India with a thumb injury.

Warner was struck while batting during the second Test last week, and he has struggled to cope with the problem in the nets this week, but is confident of being fit enough to join his teammates on the field in Melbourne on Boxing Day.

"It was okay, it was a bit sore when it hit the splice or the toe of the bat; that's to be expected, but I feel good and I'm ready to go," the 28-year-old told reporters.

"I tried to have a dip at the spinners to see if I could actually hit the ball as hard as I can, and it did feel real sore but I had to try and grind it out and get through that pain and I was able to do that."

Warner is expected to move from his usual position at gully to field at mid-on in an attempt to protect his thumb during the game.
