Australia have recorded a 39-run victory over Pakistan after the tourists fell short of a record-breaking chase in Brisbane.
Pakistan had been set a target of 490 runs - an unlikely total after they had been bowled out for 142 in the first innings - but they began day five on 382-8 and with a chance of history.
The home team required just two wickets but after play resumed, Asad Shafiq continued his impressive knock while Yasir Shah was providing spirited support at the other end.
The pair added another 67 runs during the opening stages of the final day's play but they were dealt a severe blow when Shafiq finally went for 137 when he caught by David Warner off the bowling of Mitchell Starc.
That left Rahat Ali to join Shah at the crease but four balls later, Australia completed a dramatic win when Shah was run out to leave Pakistan agonisingly short.
The second Test of the three-match series will get underway in Melbourne on Boxing Day.
