Australia post a commanding first-innings total of 530 against India on day two of the third Test, but skipper Steve Smith falls eight runs short of double century.

Australia piled on the runs in the afternoon session against India on day two of the third Test, but skipper Steve Smith fell eight runs short of a maiden Test match double century as his side were bowled out for 530.

The Baggy Greens began the afternoon on 389-7 with Smith and Ryan Harris at the crease, and the duo immediately began to take the attack to the ailing India bowlers.

The hosts quickly powered past the 400-run mark as Harris looked comfortable in the middle, while Smith continued his imperious run of form with some excellent strokes around the wicket.

Harris especially took the attack to the tourists' bowlers as he reached his half-century off 75 balls, which included seven boundaries, reaching the milestone for just the third time in his career.

Smith notched his 150 off 273 balls as Australia began to put the match out of India's reach. The duo brought up their 100 partnership while Harris soon powered past his Test match best of 68, but he fell for 74 lbw to the bowling of Ravichandran Ashwin.

Nathan Lyon was bowled for 11 by Mohammed Shami, while Smith departed in the next over for 192 when he suffered the same fate at the hands Umesh Yadav.
