Mitchell Starc helped Australia take seven New Zealand wickets before the end of the second session on day one of the first ever day-night Test in Adelaide.
The Black Caps, who are 1-0 down in the series, have reached dinner break on 173 runs following a half-century from Tom Latham, who attained the figure off 103 balls.
It was a poor start to the first innings for New Zealand as Martin Guptill was trapped lbw by Josh Hazlewood for one, but Latham managed to steady the attack until he fell for 50 off the bowling of Nathan Lyon.
Prior to that, Kane Williamson was taken out by Starc for 22, while Peter Siddle got involved in the wickets when he took out Ross Taylor for 21.
Brendon McCullum (4) and Mitchell Santner (31) were victims of Starc, and Lyon nabbed his second wicket of the day by bowling out Mark Craig, who hit 11 off 14 deliveries.
BJ Watling (24*) and Doug Bracewell (5*) will return to the crease for the final session of the day.
