Mitchell Johnson takes the wicket of Virat Kohli in the final over of day three as Australia dent what had been a remarkable India recovery in the third test at the MCG.

A remarkable fightback led by Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane has pulled India back into contention in the third test with Australia, but it was the hosts who had the last laugh on day three at the MCG.

After India's charge with the bat earlier in the day, Mitchell Johnson removed the fluent Kohli in the final over to leave the visiting side 462-8 at the close of play.

India had resumed play at 336-3 following tea, with Kohli and Rahane dominating, but their fourth-wicket, MCG-record-setting 262-run partnership was brought to an end when spinner Nathan Lyon trapped Rahane lbw for 147.

Lyon then followed up with the wicket of debutant Lokesh Rahul, who edged to Josh Hazlewood, shortly after Peter Siddle had dropped him at mid-wicket.

Ryan Harris then had MS Dhoni caught behind for 11, and dismissed new man Ravichandran Ashwin for a duck as India slipped from 409-3 to 434-7.

Their fightback was dealt its biggest blow in the final over of the day when the impressive Kohli was finally removed when Johnson found an edge and Brad Haddin made the catch diving to his right.

Mohammed Shami remains unbeaten on nine, with Ishant Sharma due to come to the wicket when play resumes tomorrow. However, with the deficit now standing at just 68 runs, India may elect to tactically declare.
