Brendon McCullum's record-breaking century helps New Zealand to a 59-run victory over Bangladesh in their World Twenty20 opener.

New Zealand have begun their World Twenty20 campaign with a win after Brendon McCullum's record-breaking century inspired them to victory over Bangladesh.

The wicketkeeper took just 55 balls to amass a huge 123 - the highest score in international T20 history - as the Black Caps posted a daunting 191.

Experienced all-rounder James Franklin also contributed 35, while Abdul Razzak was the pick of the Asians' attack with 2-28 from his four overs.

Bangladesh's response got off to the worst possible start when dangerous opener Tamim Iqbal was caught off Kyle Mills from the third ball of the innings.

From then on, they continued to lose regular wickets, with key players Shakib Al Hasan [11] and Mohammad Ashraful [21] falling as Bangladesh fell way behind the run rate.

Nasir Hossain made a 39-ball half-century for the batting side, but it wasn't enough as McCullum's first-innings fireworks had put New Zealand out of range, with the margin of victory 59 runs.

Bangladesh now need to beat Pakistan in their next Group D game to have any chance of qualifying for the super eight stage.
